The finished product

In this video you can see some of the work involved, when building a 'dormer loft conversion' from start to finish. The property is a Victorian semi-detached building in Grantham, Lincolnshire.

A large portion of the work was sadly not recorded. Some of these tasks were:

  • removing and disposing all of the existing lath and lime plastered ceilings and ceiling joists (4" x 2" timber)

  • two steel beam installations to the front and rear of the property (elements of the new structural floor)

  • replacing with new floor joists (9" x 2" timber) and tongue and groove chipboard floor boards

  • plasterboard and skim plaster the two bedrooms and family bathroom beneath the new structural floor

  • the dismantling and disposing of the rear half of the existing roof structure

  • endless trips up and down ladders and stairs, moving materials from the drop off point to the working areas.

The video begins with some nice aerial drone footage, providing a great perspective of the project in hand. The property was vacant at the time of construction.

After - two years post completion

This video shows the external building works of a 3m x 6m single story, kitchen diner extension located near Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire.

This type of extension is a popular choice for homeowners due to its fair size and (in most circumstances) does not require a planning application. However, if you are interested in extending your home.. You must always check with your local planning authority to become aware of which laws and regulations apply to your area, regardless of shape and size.

When we constructed this build, the following tasks involved:

  • setting out

  • excavation and removal of spoil for building foundation trenches

  • substructure brick and block work

  • toothing out of existing brickwork for aesthetically pleasing bonding of new material

  • laying hardcore, PIR sub floor insulation board and damp proof membrane

  • solid floor construction and concreting

  • modular scaffold erection

  • superstructure (cavity wall) brick and block work, incorporating cavity insulation

  • heavy duty lintel installation over a four metre structural opening

  • cavity tray and weep vents

  • warm roof construction of hand cut rafters and PIR insulation boards

  • breathable felt, batten and roof tiling

  • centre pivot roof light installations

  • fascia boards, gutter and downpipes

  • a four metre bi-folding door installation
